Best Supplements for Beginners UK 2026
Posted by Tom Ansell — TN Fitness
If you've just started training and you're staring at a wall of supplements wondering where to begin, this post is for you.
The honest truth? Most beginners don't need half of what the fitness industry tries to sell them. A few well-chosen supplements can genuinely support your progress — but only once your training and nutrition are consistent. No supplement fixes a bad diet or makes up for missed sessions.
With that said, here's what I'd actually recommend as a starting point — based on my BSc in Sport Science, my nutrition qualification, and years of coaching real people getting real results.
1. Protein Powder
What it does: Helps you hit your daily protein target — essential for building and repairing muscle after training.
Do you need it? Not essential if you're getting enough protein from food. But for most people, it's the most convenient way to bridge the gap. Aim for roughly your bodyweight in kg, in grams of protein per day. So if you weigh 75kg, aim for around 75g of protein daily.
What I recommend:
- Applied Nutrition Clear Whey — light, refreshing, and easy to drink. Nothing like a heavy traditional shake. Great if you've always struggled to get protein in.
- Applied Nutrition Clear Vegan — same experience, fully plant-based. Ideal if you're vegan or lactose intolerant.
- MyProtein Clear Whey Isolate Multipack — perfect if you want to try a few flavours before committing to a full tub.
When to take it: Within an hour or two of training, or whenever you need a protein top-up during the day.
2. Creatine
What it does: Increases strength and power output, supports muscle growth, and improves recovery. One of the most researched supplements in sport — the evidence is rock solid.
Do you need it? If you're lifting weights, yes. It's not a magic pill but it consistently produces results when taken daily. The key is consistency — it builds up in your system over time.
What I recommend:
- Applied Nutrition Creatine Gummies x80 — no grainy powder, no measuring. Just take them daily and get on with it. Makes staying consistent easy.
- When to take it: Any time of day — just make sure you take it every day, even on rest days.
3. Pre-Workout
What it does: Increases energy, focus, and performance in the session. Most contain caffeine, beta-alanine, and other performance ingredients.
Do you need it? No — but it can be useful on the days motivation is low or you're training early mornings or late evenings. Don't rely on it for every session.
What I recommend:
- Applied Nutrition ABE Ultimate Pre-Workout — one of the most popular pre-workouts in the UK for good reason. Effective without leaving you jittery or crashing.
- ABE Pump Pre-Workout — the caffeine-free version. Ideal if you train after 6pm and don't want it affecting your sleep.
- Applied Nutrition Pre-Workout Gel x20 — no mixing, no shaker. Grab one and go. Great for the gym bag.
When to take it: 20–30 minutes before your session.
4. A Good Shaker or Mixer
Not a supplement, but worth mentioning — a decent shaker makes a real difference to whether you actually take your supplements consistently.
What I recommend:
-
Promixx EcoZen Shaker — mixes cleanly, doesn't leak, doesn't smell after a week of use. The basics, done properly.
-
Promixx Vortex Mixer Pro — USB rechargeable, blends protein completely smooth every time. No clumps, no mess.
What to Avoid as a Beginner
Fat burners and thermogenics — expensive, largely ineffective, and not backed by solid evidence. Save your money.
Testosterone boosters — not necessary and not proven to work for the vast majority of people.
Excessive supplement stacks — if you're taking 8 different things, simplify. Pick 2–3 that actually matter and be consistent with those.
The Bottom Line
If I was starting from scratch, here's the order I'd go in:
-
Sort your nutrition first — supplements are additions, not replacements
-
Add protein powder if you're struggling to hit your protein target
-
Add creatine — take it daily, don't overcomplicate it
-
Add pre-workout if and when you feel you need it
That's it. Keep it simple, stay consistent, and let the training do the work.
